A good variable scope gathers light much better than a red-dot sight (which I doubt gathers light at all), and that 4X magnification comes in very handy at times. I have a number of red-dot sights, but they’re all on my handguns, which never see action at ranges past 50 yards. Beyond that, I use a scope.

I'd like to mount a 2X red-dot sight on my slug gun, but I notice that everyone in the world seems to be using 1X¿¿¿4X scopes. Am I missing something?
