Everyone flocks to Alaska for salmon, trout, and halibut. As far as host Joe Cermele is concerned, that leaves the largely overlooked pike fishery in the interior wide open. Chasing northerns in “the last frontier” has been on his bucket list for a long time, but little did he know a chance encounter with a school of sheefish would help him double down on list check marks. This was not a lodge experience. With a couple tents, a cooler of wild game, and a trusty shotgun, the crew spends the night in the vast Minto Flats, where the midnight sun made it possible to hook pike ’round the clock. Special thanks to the good people at Explore Fairbanks. Without their help, this epic adventure wouldn’t have been possible.
